Kinda sleep-deprived today, gang. The mental processes are a bit foggy. I shall attempt to soldier on. If none of the following makes the slightest bit of sense, you’ll know why. Onward.
The second draft of Petra is now officially in the hands of its readers. So the writer attempts to turn his addled mind to other tasks.
Spent a fair amount of the week fiddling with the Sekrit Projekt–more than I would like, really. It got frustrating for a bit, but I finally reached a point where I could stop fiddling and let it go for now. It, too, is in the hands of others at the moment.
That allowed me to finally do a read-through of “Right Before Your Very Eyes.” This was the story I had entered in last year’s Halloween contest over on Codex, where it managed to place third–easily my highest finish. Lots of people seem to like this one.
For the rewrite, I see some opportunities for pruning, but not as many as I had first thought. This next draft could be pretty easy, or I could make it harder on myself. See, I’m thinking of trying to punch up my opening. The feedback I’ve gotten tells me the second and third acts work pretty well. But part of me wonders if I couldn’t make the beginning more effective by starting at the climax of the story. A reader had suggested this, but I was considering it even before then.
Thing is, I’m leery of telling most of this piece in flashback. I’ve tried that once before, without success. But it might work better this time around. As of this morning, I had decided to at least give it a whirl, see how I liked the result. That’s subject to change, though, so stay tuned . . .
In other news, I got an idea today for the sequel to Petra. And I like it. Maybe I ought to try sleep deprivation more often.
Tax man comes Wednesday. Must get my receipts, etc., in order.
