Progress Report, in which I do what I do

The power supply in my computer finally gave up the ghost last week.  Undaunted, I’ve busted out the laptop and forged ahead.  ‘Cause that’s what I do.

After some initial uncertainty, I figured out how to fix some pacing problems and made good headway on the rewrite of "The Hills."  And y’all know what that means . . . it’s time for Magic Meter to make a reappearance!  Do contain your excitement.

It’s actually a smidge longer in the rewrite, but it flows better this time around, and my protagonist has more of a spine now.

What’s that you say?  You’d like a snippet?

Well, sure, what the hell:

Progress Report, in which I’m not sure where I am

So for once, I don’t have any critiques to do.  That means I can (gasp and swoon!) work on my own writing!

Which is what I did last week.  Got a few mss back in circulation, followed up on others, and basically tried to get myself squared away.  Then I started a rewrite of "The Hills," my 24-hour story from WotF.

I’d put up a new Magic Meter to mark my progress so far, but I honestly am not sure where I am with the story at the moment.  I know that I need to cut the opening by a substantial amount, and I have managed to lose some of that verbiage–but I’m still not happy with it.  So until I can wrestle these first few pages into something that resembles a coherent narrative, I’ll forgo Magic Meter for the nonce.

Don’t worry, sports fans; I’m sure it will be along shortly.

And hey, I’m doing actual writin’ stuff!

Write Club updates:

A tier one reject from GUD.  Response time, about six weeks.

In response to a long overdue follow-up email, a mag that shall remain nameless apologetically responded that they’ve misplaced a story of mine.  Figures.  Don’t think I’ll resubmit this one to them.  It doesn’t really have much to do with the ms being lost; these things happen.  But in the interim, their pay rates have dropped precipitously, below my minimum standards–which, let’s face it, are pretty damned low to begin with.

And yet another non-response from an agent on a novel query.  It’s been three and a half months; I’m calling it.

Gotta bail before my computer fries–which I fear it’s about to do.
