Spotted: Writers of the Future Volume XXV and Jim Baen’s Universe, October 2009

It’s official:  Writers of the Future, Volume XXV, featuring "Gone Black" by yours truly, has been spotted in the wild.  Order online, or run, don’t walk, to your nearest bookstore to get your copy.

A taste of "Gone Black:"

Hargas Base has been Code Black–total security lockdown–for a full two weeks before Staff Sergeant Manny "Outhouse" Gutierres saw the thing he shouldn’t have seen, asked the question he shouldn’t have asked.

But wait, there’s more!

The October 2009 issue of Jim Baen’s Universe, featuring my novella "Canaan," is now available.  It’s behind a paywall, but $6.00 buys the whole issue.

A taste of "Canaan:"

Eric Baines lost his virginity that night to the mystery girl, in the rear of the SUV that his parents had given him for his sixteenth birthday.

Enjoy!

Progress Report, in which I return from Hollywood

Yeah, I know, I know:  I got back from Hollywood weeks ago.  But for various reasons, some of which I still don’t quite understand, the post-WotF adjustment took me much longer than I thought it would.

Anyway, yesterday, I finally banged out some new verbiage on Wet Work.  And here’s the long-delayed return of Magic Meter to make it official:

Now then, where was I?  Oh, yeah–up to my neck in the murky waters of my second act, which, in case you were wondering, are still pretty murky.  Par for the course.

Write Club update:  Personal note from Apex.  Response time, 23 days.

‘Scuse me while I slide out the door . . .

In which someone says something nice about my work

I’ve been hesitant to post this, but I just can’t resist . . .

A gentleman who attended the Writers of the Future Awards has reviewed all the stories in Writers of the Future Volume XXV on the Asimov’s forum.  Interested parties may find detailed (and somewhat spoilerish) reviews beginning here.

The review of "Gone Black" is on the second page.  If you just can’t wait to hear the verdict, it goes a little something like this:

"In those rare instances when military science fiction is done right, the result can be absolutely mesmerizing. Witness Scalzi’s Old Man’s War and Haldeman’s The Forever War. I’m happy to report that this outstanding story falls into that shining minority."

I’d be lying if I said this didn’t tickle me to no end.

There, I posted it.  Is that wrong?
