Still on schedule with the Petra rewrite. I’m now about halfway through the novel, and into the second act.
Found myself doing a great deal of cutting yesterday, just paragraph after paragraph of unnecessary and often repetitive detail. Don’t know where that came from. First-draft-itis, I suppose. (Oh, and
will be pleased to know that I’m breaking up some of those longer chapters.)
I’m still not sure my protagonist is coming across as I intended. Indeed, I’m not sure how I want him to come across. My original conception of him doesn’t quite jibe with the way I see him today. Hmm. Well, if nothing else, I’ve made him less whiny and wimpy–two things I definitely never intended for him. And I have some more changes in store yet. That might be enough to do the trick. Or so I hope.
On an amusing note–I’ve been having a heckuva time working out a seemingly trivial detail. There’s this big tropical storm, see, that’s a major factor in the first act. And I keep waffling on what direction it’s moving. Is it heading toward the southwest or the southeast? I must have changed its direction three or four times now. Every time I think I have it nailed down, I come across something in the text that causes me to rethink it. Maddening. And the most amusing part is that, in all likelihood, no one will notice.
Devil’s in the details. Oh, yes.
