Progress Report, in which I get jittery

Finished the last two and a half chapters of Phase II of the Petra Released rewrite, bringing Magic Meter to here:

Yes, folks, the second draft of Petra Released is complete, as of 4/4/09, 6:29 pm CDT.  And there was much rejoicing.

Man, am I glad that’s over with.  Motivation has been severely lacking these last few weeks.  I feared this thing would just drag on and on and on.

Some accomplishments for this draft:

  • Cut nearly 15K words.
  • Fleshed out my protagonist and his character arc.
  • Substantially revamped one plotline, bringing it into line with the continuity established in the first novel, and resolving some serious logic problems.  With any luck, I made it more interesting, too.
  • Various and sundry line edits.
Now it goes in a drawer for a while.  I might inflict it on some masochistic willing readers, if I can find any, but I’m in no hurry to do that at the moment.  It’s time to once again catch up on some correspondence, then work on a short story rewrite, and then get started on the next novel.  These last two are actually related, as the new novel features the protagonist from the short story.

I’d posted previously that I was really excited to begin work on this next book, but now that the time has come, I’m a bit apprehensive.  It will be my first attempt at novel-length fantasy, and I have to wonder if I’m ready for this.  And will this idea really work as a novel?  And should I even bother with urban fantasy, a booming subgenre that has to go bust sometime?

First date jitters, I guess.  And do these jeans make my butt look too big?

(No, I didn’t really say that.  Move along.)

One update for Write Club:  personalized rejection from Triangulation: Dark Glass.  Response time, about 3 weeks.

Later daze . . .
